Sensors, brackets, wiring harnesses, and some housing components are reasonable to source used, provided they come from a low-mileage donor vehicle with a known history.

Use Caution or Buy New

The DEF injector and SCR catalyst are components where condition is harder to verify without specialized testing equipment. If you’re replacing a failed catalyst, a new or professionally remanufactured unit is usually the safer call. The last thing you want is to do the labor twice.

 Don’t Let the Tank Run Low

Top off your DEF at every other fuel stop if possible. Running the tank consistently low stresses the pump and heating element and increases the chance of a no-start situation at the worst possible time.

Use Quality Fluid

Stick with name-brand DEF from reputable sources. Truck stops that sell high volumes tend to have fresher stock. Avoid anything that doesn’t clearly state ISO 22241 compliance on the container.

Address Fault Codes Promptly

A DEF-related fault code is not a check engine light you can drive around on for a few weeks. These systems have built-in escalation — ignore the warning long enough and the truck will enforce a no-start condition. Deal with it while it’s still a small problem.

The short answer is that diesel engines run at lower RPMs, burn fuel more efficiently, and are built with heavier internal components than their gas counterparts. All of that adds up to a powertrain that, when maintained properly, can go the distance in ways most gas engines simply can’t.

Mileage Benchmarks by Engine

Not all diesels are created equal. Here’s a general idea of what you can expect from the three most common diesel truck engines on the road today.

Cummins (Ram 2500/3500)

Powerstroke (Ford)

Ford’s Powerstroke has had stronger and weaker generations, but the 6.7 Powerstroke, introduced in 2011, is considered one of Ford’s best diesel efforts. Expect 200,000 to 300,000 miles with proper care, and more with a fastidious maintenance record.

5 Maintenance Habits That Extend Diesel Engine Life

Getting maximum mileage out of a diesel isn’t magic. It comes down to doing the basics consistently and following the recommended maintenance schedule.

1. Change Your Oil on Schedule

Diesel engines work hard and the oil pays the price. Follow your manufacturer’s interval, and don’t stretch it. If you’re towing or operating in extreme heat, consider shortening the interval.

2. Replace Fuel Filters Regularly

Diesel fuel carries more contaminants than gasoline, and a clogged fuel filter puts strain on your injection system. This is one of the cheapest maintenance items on your truck and one of the most important.

3. Keep the Cooling System Clean

Overheating is one of the fastest ways to shorten a diesel engine’s life. Flush your coolant on schedule, inspect hoses and the radiator regularly, and deal with any leaks immediately.

4. Let It Warm Up and Cool Down

Diesel engines benefit from a short warm-up period before you work them hard, especially in cold weather. Similarly, let the engine idle for a couple of minutes after a hard run before shutting it down. Turbos in particular need time to cool.

5. Don’t Ignore Warning Signs

Excessive smoke, unusual sounds, rough starts, and dropping power are all your engine trying to tell you something. Catching a problem early is almost always cheaper than dealing with it after it becomes a failure.

We see a lot of diesel engines come through our yard, and the mileage tells only part of the story. A 350,000-mile Cummins from a truck that was maintained by the book can look remarkably clean inside. A 180,000-mile engine from a truck that skipped oil changes and ran hot repeatedly can look much worse.
